Responding to the Local Government Association’s statement that councils have "no choice" but to increase council tax, local government spokesperson Wera Hobhouse said:
"In the past local councils received most of their income via a central government fund while council tax made up only about a third or quarter of the local authority income.
"Severe cuts from Tory central government now mean that councils have to dramatically increase council tax in order to finance the services they provide.
"It is deeply cynical of the Tory government to starve local councils of their income while expecting them to deliver vital local services. The Tory Government hopes people will blame their local councils for the council tax hike, but the real culprits are the dogmatic Tory ministers who are out to destroy local government and local services."
