Commenting on the government’s announcement of so-called ‘school breakfast clubs’ Liberal Democrat Education spokesperson Layla Moran, said: “Ensuring every child has a nutritious meal during the school day is incredibly important, helping to ensure they thrive at school and get the most from their lessons. This is why the Liberal Democrats fought to deliver universal infant free school meals in the Coalition. “While we welcome any attempt to build on that, today’s announcement is in fact a disappointing climb down from the government’s election promise of free breakfasts for all primary school children. This money will only be available to a small proportion of schools, meaning many children living in poverty will not benefit at all. “This announcement will do little to distract from this government’s disastrous record on education – of under paying our teachers, under funding our schools, and reducing eligibility for free school lunches which many hard-working parents rely on”.
