Responding to the announcement that there will be a review into the NHS Breast Cancer Screening Programme, former Liberal Democrat Health Minister and Chair of the Science and Technology Committee Norman Lamb, said:
"My thoughts are with everyone who has been affected by this devastating failure. The independent review of the NHS Breast Cancer Screening Programme is certainly welcome.
"However, the Health Secretary must look at whether a broader review of other population screening programmes is needed. It is essential he ensures that these important programmes have full public confidence, and that we will never see errors of this kind again. It is also vital that the use of algorithms in healthcare is closely monitored to ensure that we can fully trust the technology to operate in the interests of patients.
"This review must be truly independent and given the necessary powers to carry out a completely thorough examination of what has gone wrong".
