In these times when public services are crying out for money it seems curious that Julia Mulligan, North Yorkshire Police and Crime Commissioner, should spend over £141,000 on consultants’ fees in her bid to take over the Fire and Rescue Service.

It may be that it makes sense to combine services but not to combine the Police with Fire and Rescue. The Police are about enforcement and it is vital that the Fire and Rescue Service is kept separate from enforcement – that is not their function – saving lives is. A much better fit would be with the Ambulance Service.
