EuropeOnly days after the ‘historic breakthrough deal’ with the EU, David Davis appears to have scuppered it.

A Spanish journalist asked David Davis on Monday whether the transition deal applied to Gibraltar which he confirmed that he thought that it did. His reply flies in the face of the agreement that Spain has secured from the rest of the EU that Spain and the UK must reach a bilateral agreement over the future of Gibraltar before any deal can be agreed.

Michel Barnier said on Tuesday, “No agreement between the European Union and the United Kingdom can apply to the territory of Gibraltar without a bilateral agreement between the Kingdom of Spain and the United Kingdom.” Unfortunately Spain is likely to use Gibraltar as a massive bargaining chip.

To cause further problems, the plan to try to get access for financial services is being challenged by Switzerland as they will get a worse deal than we are hoping for.
