Today Leader of the Liberal Democrats, Vince Cable has called on the TV networks to widen the proposed  TV debates, putting himself forward as providing a  real alternative, a people’s vote.

In letters to the BBC, Sky and ITV Cable called the proposed set up in which two pro-Brexit figures debate each other an "egregious imbalance".

Cable wrote:

"Such a debate is clearly highly unsatisfactory, and will reveal almost nothing about the alternative options before the country.

"The principal alternative to the withdrawal agreement is for the UK to remain as a full and influential member of the European Union.

"All the evidence suggests that there is now a majority in the country for doing so, and a substantial majority for a People’s Vote.  Yet neither Jeremy Corbyn nor Theresa May supports this route."

Notes to editors:

Vince Cable wrote to Lord Hall, Dame Carolyn McCall and Jeremy Darroch. The Letter to Lord Hall is below (and other letters available on request)

Dear Lord Hall,

Further to the letter from our President and Chief Executive this week, I write with a proposal to redress the egregious imbalance which has been brought about by the BBC’s and ITV’s in-principle agreement to stage a debate between two pro-Brexit figures in Theresa May and Jeremy Corbyn.

Such a debate is clearly highly unsatisfactory, and will reveal almost nothing about the alternative options before the country.  The principal alternative to the withdrawal agreement is for the UK to remain as a full and influential member of the European Union.  All the evidence suggests that there is now a majority in the country for doing so, and a substantial majority for a People’s Vote.  Yet neither Jeremy Corbyn nor Theresa May supports this route.

In order that this essential alternative option can be given a fair hearing by the British people, I offer myself to debate with each of Jeremy Corbyn and Theresa May.  Since there has been some controversy over which network these debates should take place on, I would be happy to offer myself to the BBC to debate one of them and to ITV or Sky to debate the other.

I am copying this letter to the Prime Minister, the Leader of the Opposition and writing in similar terms to ITV and Sky.  I look forward to your response.

Yours sincerely

Rt Hon. Sir Vince Cable, MP
Leader of the Liberal Democrats
