There’s a very good article in today’s Guardian by Anne McElvoy about how Remainers need to make our arguments. She say it’s very easy to get into he condescending ‘you were stupid’ attitude. We need to respect how people voted and not deride that decision otherwise we will become the equivalent of Nigel Farage.
A better argument is ‘we weren’t told this’. The sins of omission made by the Leavers allow us to say, ‘Yes, we know how you voted, but if they’d told you this would you have changed your mind?’. The hard Irish border, the problems with EU nationals working in the NHS, the bribes paid to Nissan and the issues for the City of London were all glossed over.
We can rightly exploit these but the tone needs to be more sympathetic and conciliatory.
