Responding to the Government statement on the Belhaj and Boudchar cases, Liberal Democrat MP Alistair Carmichael has challenged ministers to do more to deliver justice for those who were involved in unlawful extraordinary rendition.
Liberal Democrat MP Alistair Carmichael said:
“Today’s announcement brings to a close a shameful chain of events which have been deeply disturbing to Mr. Belhaj and Ms. Boudchar. They were abducted and tortured, the British Government failed in its duty of care towards them, and missed several opportunities to alleviate their suffering. The Government was right to issue an unconditional apology.
“Words alone however, are simply not enough. The Government owe it to Mr. Belhaj and Ms. Boudchar to ensure that what happened to them, can never happen again: this will involve massive culture changes to the way in which our security services work.
“They must be more accountable. The Government need to engage fully with the recommendations of the ISC, and must ensure that the guidance which the security services follow is in line with our values as a nation.”
