Statistics published today by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders show that British commercial vehicle manufacturing declined by more than half in June.
Responding, Liberal Democrat Treasury and Business Spokesperson Chuka Umunna MP said:
“The present state of the motor industry should unsettle even the most devoted Brexiters: Brexit now threatens to uproot one of our most dynamic sectors.
“Each day it becomes clearer that the only Brexit Boris Johnson is interested in is a catastrophic no-deal.
The country needs a change of course right now, before UK car factories face a devastating blow. That is why the Liberal Democrats will continue to lead the fight to stop Brexit."
Key points in the release:
Production for the home market fell by 44.7%, while exports declined by 65.4%. Investment in the sector also fell to £90m compared to average annual investment of £2.7 billion over the previous seven years.
